PSU Cable Extensions vs. Custom Cables
Improving your build's aesthetics with custom cables requires understanding safety boundaries. This guide explains extensions, modular replacements, and pinout hazards.
Cable Extensions
Extensions plug into the female ends of your PSU's stock cables. Because they do not connect directly to the PSU, they do not require model compatibility. They are cheap and safe, but add extra cable bulk that must be managed behind the motherboard tray.
Direct Custom Replacement Cables
These replacement cables connect directly to the PSU housing, eliminating stock cable bulk.
Wire Gauges (AWG)
When purchasing custom cables, ensure they use high-quality 16 AWG wire (thicker conductors) rather than thin 18 AWG, especially for high-draw CPU EPS and GPU PCIe circuits. Thicker wires reduce voltage drop and run much cooler under high load configurations.
