PSU Lifespan & Capacitor Aging

Power supplies do not last forever. This guide explains capacitor aging, PSU lifespan indicators, and how to evaluate when your unit requires replacement.

Capacitor Degradation

The primary failure point in old PSUs is the electrolytic capacitors. These contain liquid electrolytes that slowly dry out over time, especially when exposed to high heat (above 40°C ambient).

As capacitors age, their Equivalent Series Resistance (ESR) increases, reducing their ability to clean up voltage ripple. This manifests as random BSODs, system freezes, or failed cold boots.

Standard Lifespan Expectancy

  • Premium Tier (Corsair RMx, Seasonic Focus): 10-year warranties. Often last 10-12 years safely.
  • Mid-Tier (Bronze/Gold units under $100): 5-year warranties. Usually reliable for 5-7 years.
  • White/Budget Tier: 2 to 3-year warranties. Recommend replacement after 3-4 years.
⚠ Upgrade Guideline: If you are upgrading from an older GPU (like RTX 3070) to a modern RTX 50-series card, and your PSU is older than 5 years, do not reuse it. The intense transient peaks on Blackwell/RDNA4 architectures will quickly expose degraded capacitors, causing shutdowns.
