UPS & Surge Protection Sizing Guide

Blackouts and brownouts can ruin expensive PC hardware. This guide outlines how to choose the right battery backup (UPS) for your desktop.

Surge Protector vs. UPS

A standard surge protector strip redirects voltage spikes (such as lightning strikes) to the ground. A Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) does this as well, but also includes a large internal battery that kicks in within 4-12 milliseconds when power drops.

VA vs. Wattage Ratings

UPS systems are rated in Volt-Amps (VA) and Watts. The Wattage rating is the critical number. If your gaming PC draws 650W under load and you hook it to a UPS rated for 1000VA / 600W, the UPS will trip its overload circuit and turn off the moment you start gaming.

⚠ Pure Sine Wave Rule: Modern high-end PSUs with Active PFC (Power Factor Correction) require a Pure Sine Wave UPS. Cheap "Simulated" or "Modified" sine wave backups can cause Active PFC power supplies to buzz, drop efficiency, or shut down entirely.

How much battery runtime do you get?

A standard 1500VA UPS will keep a 400W gaming system running for roughly 5 to 10 minutes. This is not designed for continuous gaming, but rather to give you enough time to save files, close games, and execute a graceful OS shutdown.
